Unit 4 Blog

1. Describe your experience. (Did you find it beneficial? Difficult?) Why or Why not? Would you recommend this to others? Why or Why not?

I loved the Loving Kindness exercise. I felt totally relaxed and felt a sense of warmth. I was able to take time to think about each person I care about and give them individual attention and love. As I did this, I felt the loving energy enveloping me too.

2. What is the concept of “Mental Workout"? What does the research indicate are the proven benefits of a Mental Work Out? How can you implement mental workouts to foster your psychological health?

A mental workout is taking time out to train you mind to find its "quietness." This is something that your mind is not accustomed to doing. It is a great way to reduce stress. It also gives you time to refresh. This mental workout also helps train your mind to open to its spirit-body connection and obtain a total wellness. Research has shown that mental workouts in the form of meditation and yoga has improved physical and psychological health. I can implement mental workouts by taking 15 to 20 minute breaks to quiet my mind. I can also do daily meditations.

Along with stress issues, remember to not "bottle up" something that is "eating at you" - whatever it is, even if it's with a family member. I learned the hard way "To Thine Own Self Be True" - you can't live in conflict with yourself without something having to give! Being honest with yourself and what you're feeling without judging it gives you a starting point...

One quick experience, I was with an alcoholic for 2 years (I was 18 - 20 w/ 2 children); my sister said, "He doesn't beat you and he brings home a paycheck" when I tried to express my unhappiness with the situation. It made feel I was being too picky or acting spoiled to want more in a relationship than avoiding a drunk, making 'nice' to keep him appeased, handling children and bills while attending college and being the sole transportation (he lost his license). -- I knew it was time to leave when I regularly wished he'd never come home or simply evaporate, regardless of my sister's "wisdom"!

DON'T SECOND-GUESS YOURSELF - no one knows you and your life like you do, and they can only advise from their outside perception.
